During Advent 2010, St.
Francis Hosted the LEttERS HoME
Art Installation
As Christmas becomes increasingly commercialized, and
consumption is often more glorified than God, Advent offers us a chance for
introspection and reflection – an oasis of peace in this busy season. Our Advent theme at St. Francis this year is
“Our Journey to Bethlehem”. We might
reflect on the fact that the Holy Family was homeless in Bethlehem, an
experience shared by more than 2,000 people in Washtenaw County today.
St. Francis has a long tradition of supporting local efforts
to address homelessness, such as: serving
a monthly meal at the Delonis shelter; hosting the rotating men’s shelter for a
week each year; volunteering at the Alpha House family shelter twice a year;
working on Habitat for Humanity homes; and participating in local organizations
like RAAH, the Coalition of Churches (which assists with the GroundCover
monthly newspaper). In fact, the Robert
J. Delonis Center is named after a St. Francis parishioner.
To provide an opportunity for education, further reflection,
and response, St. Francis is hosting an art exhibit during the Advent season
(11/26–12/20). This installation, called
LEttERS
HoME, will be located in the alcove in the main entrance to the church.
Join the St. Francis Peace & Justice Committee on Tuesday, November 30, 2010, at 7:00 p.m.
as we host a reception for the artists, Sally Thielen and her sister, Susan
Clinthorne. They will speak about their motivation for
creating this compelling exhibit and will be displaying additional pieces.
